Greening Residential colonies – Participatory Approach
|
|
Rapid urbanization, mushrooming of satellite colonies is rampant in the city as
a result, vast open areas in the road margins and residential colonies are left
without planting. HMDA (erstwhile HUDA) has identified these open spaces in residential
areas to bring it under tree cover. While identifying the area, action has been
taken to build up sufficient awareness in the residential areas by involving the
residents’ welfare associations.
|
|
700 Residents Welfare Associations in different parts of the city were made partners
in greening the city.

A study data revealed that the specific pollutant concentrations are decreasing
with the increase in plantation density, which is due to absorption of specific
pollutants by the avenue plantations. It is also observed that in the study area
it is found that the leaves of the plants (trees) are good for deposition of the
suspended particulate matter on its leaves thereby avoiding dust pollution. Similarly
the study revealed that as the plantation density increased the concentration of
gaseous pollutants like oxides of nitrogen and sulpher dioxide show decreased trend
in their concentration. On the same lines, it is observed that the CO levels are
reduced considerably in thick plantation zones. Another observation is that the
existing plants are good in absorbing gaseous pollutants. The noise levels also
decreased substantially as the plantation density increased. The noise levels varies
from day time to night time and due to presence of large number of plants the noise
levels have been considerably reduced. In general, plantations have controlled the
microclimate around the area of their existence by reducing pollution levels as
indicated below.

- Prior to 1995, only 4.5% of geographical area of HUDA was under green cover. now
the green cover increased to 26%
- A total of 154 lakh saplings were planted, protected and nurtured
- A spatial area of 19336 ha is brought under Green Cover
- 320 km of roadside strip plantations have been developed covering 60 peri-urban
villages
- Of particular interest is to note that low-income group housing areas where interest
is passive special emphasis was given to introduce parks and recreation areas.
- HMDA has taken up afforestation in 32 degraded reserve forest blocks in and around
HMDA area covering an area of 2648 hectares and has brought them under effective
Green cover with a mixtures of species simulating natural forest and useful to the
local villagers giving free access for fodder, twig fuel and medicinal usufructs.
- Green cover in and around any developing city is an asset as it would reduce pollution
increase ground water recharge and improve the aesthetic value. HMDA (erstwhile
HUDA) has taken efforts along with its other greening partners, the then MCH, HMWS&SB
& Forest Department to increase the green cover to 26%
